The audio-lingual method is one of the methods which is used in teaching foreign languages. The essence of this method lies in teaching the language directly and without any reference to their mother tongue. For instance, a certain grammar model is presented to students and they are supposed to memorize it.
The result is considered to be successful when students are able to use this structure spontaneously. For this reason, each lesson is based on a set of drills which the students repeat in order to memorize the structure. Oral drills include repetition, inflection, replacement and restatement. Speaking about the audio-lingual method examples, consider the following. The teacher says: I ate the apple. The student says: I ate the apples. This is a bright example of inflection.
This method is opposed to the communicative language teaching which is based on constant interaction which is considered to be the main goal of learning a language.
The audio-lingual method has both its advocates and its opponents. The method has advantages and disadvantages as well. Speaking about its good points, the students memorize the structure correctly from the very beginning which means that they don't have to make something up.
Once they learn it, they will know how to use the structure in a sentence. However, the main drawback of this method is that it leaves no freedom for a student. S/he cannot choose voluntarily how to build the sentence. The student is supposed to repeat everything after the teacher.
Yet, both these methods have fruitful results which is probably the most important thing in terms of teaching a foreign language.
