The Appeal of the Transcendental American Scholar
Ralph Waldo Emer news began his life as the son of a minister and thus grew up with a genuinely religious, as soundly as, traditionalist background. This all changed though, shortly subsequently the death of his wife, during which time he began to question the traditional focusing of thinking. This direct Emerson to become one of the founders of the transcendental movement, a lead that became popular during the early 19th century. This crusade was built upon the rejection of the nuance and society of that time, especially the intellectual and religious teachings. The transcendentalists core beliefs included, the underlying goodness of man and that societys institutions corrupted that goodness. whence they believed that man is at his best when independent and that this independence is what led to enlightenment. Emerson, around whom transcendentalism was centered, utilized this concept in his speech, The American Scholar. This speech, originally named An Oration Delivered before the Phi of import Kappa Society, at Cambridge, august 31, 1837, was given to the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Harvard University. This society was make up of the most distinguished male students at Harvard.

In this speech Emerson combats the educational system in which these students had thrived, yet their response was extremely supportive. In fact the Phi Beta Kappa Society even named their literary quarterly after the speech. In his American Scholar speech, Emerson rhetorically creates a new original scholar that is appealing to students through his points on, the importance of the whole mankind being, the role of books, and the duties of the American scholar.
