Giraffa camelopardalis is one animal that has always been a focus point in the study of evolution. Standing 16-20 feet lofty with patches of dark brown or black over a tannish coat, the giraffe is the tallest animate animal. The name Giraffa camelopardalis comes from the Italian form Giraffa, which can probably be traced to an ancient Arabic word, and the Latin interpretation of the Greek kamelos or camel and pardalis or leopard. With a wide range of inhabitants, giraffes are spread out among the Africa continent, acknowledging up to nine subspecies according to fur patterns- from Chad in the join to South Africa in the south to Niger in the west and Somalia in the east.
One of the two living species of the family Giraffidae, only giraffes and okapi, their closest living relative, remain. With multiple fossil genera, Giraffidae was at one term a more substantial family. First arising 8 one thousand million years ago in South Central europium during the Miocene period, the earliest known giraffid was the Climacoceras. The superfamily Giraffoidea and Antilocapridae evolved from the common extinct family Palaeomerycidae (Mitchell, 2003).

Bohlinia roamed China and northern India due to climate change and the genus Giraffa emerged into Africa around 7 million years ago. Giraffa camelopardalis arose around 1 genus Mya in eastern Africa during the Pleistocene (Mitchell, 2003). Originally thought to be an acquired-characteristic, scientists now agree upon a Darwinian approach that giraffes with vast necks had more success and were able to reproduce the most (Prothero, 2003).
