You have probably already figured out where the Mohawks cowcatcher were from. Yes, New York state. And some Mohawks still live in New York today, but most Mohawks retreated to Canada in the 1700´s. There they lived in large wood-framed buildings covered with sheets of elm bark. In fact, one Mohawk house could be a hundred feet long, and an entire kin of 60 people could live in it! Today, the houses argon all apply for ceremonial purposes. The mohawks live now in forward-looking houses and apartments, just like all of us.  

When it comes to the clothes, it is nothing like we prevail today. So no Berkin bags, Monolo shoes, Chanel dresses or any Armani suits were worn. The women wore wraparound skirts with knee-length leggings and they alike often wore a poncho (also called an overdress). Mohawk men did not tangle with skirts, but they wore European costume like cloth shirts and consequently they decorated them with beadwork and ribbons. On their feet, they would take moccasins. The Mohawks did not wear long headdresses like the Sioux. Mohawks women sometimes wore special beaded tiaras on their head.



In times of war, men shaved their heads on from each one side, and only left a thick hair-stripe down the nerve centre of it. And that created the style which is called Mohawk. 

Mohawk men and women had different roles in the Mohawk tribe. Mohawk men were in charge of search and war. Mohawk women were in charge of family and farming. But there are something that are quite unusual with the Mohawks. You see, the clans were always ruled by women!
